During the second half of the 19th century, the wallpaper industry began to grow in Sweden. Industrialisation and new wallpaper technology made it possible to produce more and larger collections of wallpaper. The growing population increased the demand for cheap wallpaper and wallpapering became more widespread. Wallpaper often contained stylised shapes with simpler patterns. They lent themselves well to machine printing.
Reinterpretations of older styles were popular. Blue prints on a natural-coloured surface were popular throughout the period. Really dark colours, such as black background with gold and brown prints, were also common in many homes.
